P&S Camera w/DSLR Quality?

I'm not a very serious photographer, but I enjoy taking pictures, especially of me, friends, and family at events. I really love the quality of the pictures taken by a DSLR, especially the way people look in them. I'm not sure how to describe it, but it's clearer and more flattering. I've taken a look at the Olympus PEN E-PL2 and Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5, but I'm not entirely sure that they will deliver what I want because I haven't seen enough sample photos of people online (most of them are of scenery or objects). Can anyone recommend a good P&S or hybrid camera that delivers this same quality for a reasonable price ($500 and below)? Thanks in advance!
